Christmas Cactus How To Make Bloom
Does your tree need a friend?
Q: I have a healthy 20-year-old macadamia tree that I started from a seed gathered from a central Fort Myers yard. It is the only survivor of six that I originally started. Does it need a pollinator? It blooms but it never sets fruit. I need to know if I should obtain another or are some of these trees non-bearing? Andrew, Fort Myers
A: Macadamia trees grow well in our area. Most macadamia trees are self-fruitful, but some varieties may have higher yields when planted with a tree of a different variety.
Planting two or more trees of the same variety or cultivar does not make them more fruitful as there is no genetic variation; essentially they are the same tree. Self-sterile variety of any particular fruit tree may be planted with another tree of the same species, but a different cultivar is needed in order for the former to be fruitful.
Thus, if your six trees, all coming from the same parent tree, were ever fruitful, it indicates good self-pollination and fruitfulness without the need to introduce another variety. If these six trees never yielded, then you may have a self-sterile cultivar requiring a pollenizer or a macadamia of a different cultivar in order to yield.
The pollinators are bees and other insects. It is unlikely that insect pests or disease are the reason for the lack of fruit set and fruit production.
There are approximately 40 described cultivars. The ones sold locally are adapted to Florida conditions.
Q: I have a large, mature Christmas cactus. It is too large to bring into the house so it stayed on the lanai when the temps were around 32 degrees this past January. I covered it with a sheet and backed it up to the covered barbecue grill. This season the bottom stems are rose-colored and not green like the rest of the plant. Is it weather-related, too much water, lacking some sort of fertilizer or is this normal? I dont want to lose the plant, which I show off with pride.

Since youve had this plant for quite some time, it would probably have experienced cold damage in the past and apparently recovered quite well. This would have been especially true during the winter of 2009-10.
Cold temperatures usually damage the newer, more tender growth of a plant and not the base with older and more protected tissue. Consequently, this is probably a fungal disease starting in the soil and may be due to excess irrigation.

One important thing to consider is that the flowers on the cactus plants have an important purpose. Eventually, these flowers will drop off and turn into some kind of fruit or seed packet. The seeds are important to help further the survival of the plant. That is why if you pick too many of the flowers or the seeds or fruit that you can put the plant in danger. Cactus flowers are beautiful but it is not worth endangering the plant over. Be careful not to cut too many of the flowers off. Also consider that if you pick all of the prickly pear flowers, for example, there will not be any prickly pear fruit to enjoy.
