Rhododendrons, frequently called the “King of Shrubs” and regarded by many as the best flowering evergreen plants, are especially well-suited to our climate on Staten Island. Their showy spring blossoms and deep green foliage, attractive in all seasons, make Rhododendrons stand out in the landscape at any time of the year.

All Azaleas are Rhododendrons. They belong to the genus Rhododendron and are members of the Heath family, which includes Heath and Heathers, Blueberries, Mountain Laurels and many others. These acid-loving plants appreciate good drainage and a soil high in organic matter or humus.

Rhododendrons have big, shiny, leathery evergreen leaves and clusters of large pink, white, apricot, pale orange or purplish flowers. They don’t appreciate full, hot sun and won’t thrive in complete shade either, so for best results select an area which will get morning sun and afternoon shade.

Early spring planting of Rhododendrons is recommended. Your plants may be purchased in a container or wrapped in burlap. Before planting, soak the plant thoroughly in a tub of water. If the plant is root-bound, loosen and cut some of the outer roots to encourage new roots to grow into the new soil. Hosing off the soil from the outer roots can be beneficial in aiding them to become well-established in their new home.

Burlap may be left on the root ball; anything fabricated with plastic or another non-biodegradable material should be removed before planting, as should any plastic cord or string. Your container-grown plant may have encircling roots that will need to be cut and outer roots that will need to be loosened in order to make good contact with the new soil. The addition of oak leaves, pine needles or other acid-type compost, is helpful when growing Rhododendrons.


GO EASY ON THE ROOTS

Avoid planting your Rhododendron too deep, and be careful when handling the easily damaged roots. The top of the root ball should be even with the surface of the ground or 1 to 2 inches above the surface. Never plant Rhododendrons deeper than they were grown in the nursery.

Since Rhododendrons are shallow-rooted, their roots can easily dry out during the hot summer months. They should be well-watered, especially during the first growing season when the roots haven’t gotten out of their original root ball and into the surrounding soil.

Their very fine roots will take longer to merge into the new planting bed than many other plants, and for this reason will not be able to easily draw water except from the original root ball. If this ball is permitted to dry out, your new Rhododendron will have much difficulty in getting wet again. A solution is to place a hose at the base of the plant and slowly let the water trickle into the planting bed.
