I’m not sure who is to be pitied more, greeting card manufacturers or fathers.

I went to the drugstore this week to pick out a Father’s Day card for the patriarch. It was rough going. The selection is so much smaller than it is for Mother’s Day. And none of the possible selections even vaguely represented any of the dozens of men I know who are fathers. I wasn’t the only person who thought so. Standing beside me was another woman who was employing the same method of Father’s Day card selection: scan cards, lean forward hopefully. Pluck card from rack. Open card. Read sentiments therein. Sigh heavily. Replace card on rack. Repeat.

Our tandem sighs got heavier with each round of hopeful card selection. Both of us left the Father’s Day card rack in defeat. I’m not sure where the other woman was going, but I was headed home to create a do-it-yourself card with old photographs and cardboard.

Pity the greeting card manufacturers because there are millions of potential Father’s Day card purchasers in the buying public. And yet what we want to say to our fathers and about our fathers is so hard to define.

Pity the dads because the conclusions greeting card manufacturers have drawn about modern fatherhood are not flattering.

One of the cards featured a singing hot dog. At least one was in the shape of a frosty mug of beer.

Some suggested that the thing dear old dad would most like on Father’s Day is to avoid his family by golfing, fishing or watching baseball.

None of them suggested that dad would like to spend Father’s Day indulging in something a little different. Like, say, beekeeping. Or small engine repair. Or gathering edible mushrooms. Or playing Gaelic-rules hurling (which is actually a game played with a ball and a stick and has nothing to do with frosty mugs of beer).

And then there is the entire Homer Simpson sub-genre of Father’s Day card, which implies that the pop-culture figure we most associate with fathers is a well-meaning but impulsive and self-indulgent buffoon, given to temper tantrums and binging on beer and doughnuts. Although not necessarily at the same time.

Cards with Homer Simpson, singing hot dogs and frosty mugs of beer get one thing right about modern fatherhood: Dad is a guy with a sense of humour about himself. You wouldn’t think of giving your mom a Mother’s Day card with a picture of a frosty glass of chardonnay. Mothers have a sense of humour, too, but there is a certain line of lèse majesté that is not to be crossed when it comes to mom.
