University of South Carolina School of Law starts program pairing students ...

COLUMBIA, SC - The University of South Carolina law school is to start a new program that pairs students with the lawyers of the law who work with clients who can not afford to pay for their services.

Law School Dean Robert Wilcox said Thursday the new program places law students in second and third year as an assistant to lawyers working on pro bono cases.

Wilcox says the program enhances the legal education of students by helping them understand the importance of providing legal services to all members of a community, so customers can pay for them or not.

The students, who will be known as committed Carolina, will help lawyers to research and drafting of legal documents. They will not be paid or get course credit for their work and can help only on cases pro bono.

At the clinic, volunteer lawyers VLJ to provide legal advice and representation limited to self-representation of debtors face a series of concerns. These include lawsuits by creditors or debt collectors to recover alleged debts, publishes credit report and differences, the garnishment of wages, harassing calls and letters on debt and bank accounts frozen ."Helping clients in need is a good effort and I am very pleased that Gregory & Reed focuses on pro bono work," says Zilbergeld. "In a clinic, we had a member who came with a stack of legal papers of creditors and no idea how. Naturally, she was frightened and upset, but we were able to help him take the first steps in resolving the issue. She was actually smiling when she left. "Zilbergeld graduate of Seton Hall Law School in 2008 and clerked at the Superior Court Judge Michael P. Wright in the counties of Morris and Sussex.In this role, he managed some special cases involving civil and Law Division landlord / tenant issues, consumer and commercial debt litigation, business and labor law, consumer fraud and construction , insurance coverage litigation and personal injury. Zilbergeld graduate of Rutgers University in 1997 with a BA in political science and history.
