Gary Snyder comes home to Reed College

Reed College celebrated its centennial with a series of programs and reunions, and for a few days the campus was crawling with educated, white-haired people who wanted to talk about calligraphy.

They came to the right place. Not only was there an exhibition about Lloyd Reynolds, the legendary teacher who taught himself calligraphy and then inspired generations to think deeply about what they wrote and how they wrote it, but also Reynolds' most famous student, Gary Snyder, class of '51, was at the center of the action.

Snyder was an enthusiastic participant in a three-hour symposium on Reynolds and gave the keynote address at the Centennial Fanfayre, a program that culminated with Reynolds' widow presenting Snyder with a calligraphed broadside of a poem by Han-shan, the Chinese poet whose name means Cold Mountain, that Snyder had translated and Reynolds turned into fine art.

It was a perfect Reed moment, and Snyder handled it with his usual grace and good cheer. A few hours earlier, he'd been joking about how he was the worst calligrapher among his group of friends at Reed and that people now know everything about Reynolds except the fact that Snyder never took calligraphy from him. Creative writing, yes, and Reynolds was such a big influence that Snyder dedicated his book "Myths and Texts" to Reynolds and another Reed professor, David French, but Snyder learned calligraphy from an older Reed friend, Charles Leong, a Chinese American who served in World War II.

That was more than 60 years ago, when Snyder was climbing mountains and burning with an intense love for poetry and working on his Reed thesis about the myths of the Haida people of British Columbia. The thesis was said to be the most copied in the history of Reed College, Snyder said with a note of pride, until it was published as "He Who Hunted Birds in His Father's Village." His thesis was scholarly enough to be published and interesting enough that undergraduates wanted to read it, which is part of what makes Snyder the ultimate Reedie, the one chosen to mark the college's centennial and set an example for its next 100 years.

Snyder is 81, a lion in winter with a weathered face and bright eyes and two studs, one of them turquoise, in his left ear. He doesn't climb mountains anymore, but he still looks forward to a summer backpacking trip in the Sierras and he still keeps the fire of poetry burning bright.

And the wait of 30 or 90 days is way passed the Aug17th deadline. A Person can apply only when visa's are available. For example right now there are no Visas for EB2. So no one can apply for I 485 under EB2 category. But when visas are available like EB3 why do not we apply. Cut off dates are USCIS created ones for their work conveninece by allowing few applicants . It is not law. There is no such hard and fast law stating that the applicants having priority dates before cut off dates can only apply for I 485. Just USCIS can issue a Circular to allow I 485 against to visa dates.
