Volkswagen Fields 450-hp Golf Racer at Nurburgring
Year on the market, Volkswagen has taken to showing off some special editions of the GTI, including convertibles at its Wörthersee festival. Well, the festivities aren’t over because today VW announced it was going to field a special edition of the Golf GTI at this weekend’s 24-Hours at the NürburgringThe three 450-hp race Golf GTIs, dubbed Golf24s, will make their debut this Thursday at the Nürburgring. While the Golf24 may look like a production GTI, it doesn’t share much with it other than the body shell. All three Golf24s feature 450-hp 2.5-liter turbocharged Inline-5 engines, similar to the engine found in the Audi TT RS mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox. Like the Golf R, the Golf24 will put its power down through all four wheels.
Behind the wheel of each of the three Golf24 racecars will be a seasoned team of four drivers ready to take on 24-hours of the green hell. Behind the wheel of the white and red number 35 Golf24 is Peter Terting, Nicki Thiim, Franck Mailleux and René Rast. Driving the white and blue number 135 Golf 24 will be Thomas Mutsch, Fredrik Ekblom, Patrick Simon and Edoardo Mortara. Lastly, behind the wheel of the white and yellow number 235 Golf24 will be Johnny Herbert, Patrick Bernhardt, Mark Blundell and René Rast.
As awesome as a production version of the Golf24 would be, don’t hold your breath.
