The Review: Foo Fighters - "Wasting Light"

It was the early 90’s and it was the height of the alternative music craze. I like a lot of other people, loved bands like Alice In Chains, Pearl Jam and Nirvana. It was pre-Internet, so you got most of your music news from rock magazines or word of mouth.

Some time before Kurt Cobain committed suicide, word started to circulate that Nirvana drummer Dave Grohl was working in a side project.

Little did we know that side project would develop into the Foo Fighters.

Grohl never released the first batch of songs, of which a few cassettes exists as an EP called Pocketwatch. After Cobain’s death in 1994 Grohl went back to his solo project and created a great solo album that he released under the Foo Fighters’ name. Grohl played all the instruments and did all of the singing, save for the guitar part on one song, but ultimately recruited a band to play live songs. Since then the line-up has had some changes, but 17 years later the Foo Fighters are still cranking out record and in early 2011 they released their seventh studio album Wasting Light.

Wasting Light continues the band’s sound of rock music with a sense of melody but a bit of a punk attitude. Grohl combines his love of punk rock and heavy metal with tremendous pop sensibilities.

The Foo Fighters are one of the few mainstream, big label bands I listen to and one of the most consistent bands out there. They came up in the heyday of “alternative” rock and without drastically changing their sound, have maintained relevance and popularity.  Wasting Light takes the basic Foo Fighters formula with just a few tweaks. Nirvana producer Butch Vig produced the album, which was recorded on analog tape in Grohl’s garage studio.

– stars off with a strange intro before the guitars really kick in. Once drummer Taylor Hawkins joins the fray, it really starts to sound like a Foo Fighters song. Dave Grohl continues the use of soft verses, which are a staple of the Foo Fighters’ sound, but instead of a big, loud chorus he goes for a more melodic, poppy chorus that works pretty well. There are loud moments, including a nice riff at the conclusion of the chorus.

– Grohl writes some of the best power ballads, and “Dear Rosemary” fits this description. It’s not a memorable as “Everlong”, as catchy as “Next Year” or as haunting as the lesser-known “Stranger Things Have Happened”, but it is a pretty, catchy song that, while not totally slow, shows off the Foo’s tender side. Punk/alternative legend Bob Mould appears on the track and he and Grohl do a nice call and response tradeoff towards the end of the track.
