Natrona County Public Library
Juneteenth, handcarts and boxing
Today’s variety of activities include a picnic to celebrate with neighbors, a visit to a dinosaur dig, a presentation on handcarts in Wyoming history and a boxing card hosted by the Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Wyoming.
Here is a summary, as provided to the Star-Tribune.
This year’s Juneteenth Celebration , the oldest black American holiday, is a picnic at 3 p.m. today in Matthew Campfield Park. Due to lack of participation the last few years, there will not be a march preceding the picnic. Those attending are asked to take a covered dish to share, but not in a galvanized pot or pan, which is against the county health code.
Gospel singers and choirs from local churches will provide the entertainment. There will be a bounce house and Velcro wall for children. Please do not take your pets.
The dig site for the Tate Geological Museum’s newest find, the fossilized remains of a Tyrannosaurus rex , will be open to the general public on Saturdays, beginning today. J.P. Cavigelli, who originally discovered the T. rex, named Lee Rex, said that all those interested should meet at the Lady Bird Rest Area two miles west of Lusk at 10 a.m.
From Casper, take I-25 south to the U.S. Highway 18/Highway 20 exit, about 60.5 miles east of Casper, and then follow U.S. 18/20 east for approximately 40 miles to the Lady Bird Rest Area just west of Lusk, where someone from the site will lead the way. Carpooling is suggested for those with low-clearance vehicles because the last quarter mile is “rough,” but it can also be walked.
Those planning to go should take plenty of drinking water, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses, a camera and a sack lunch. Fossil collecting, pets, firearms and fireworks are not allowed.
St. Patrick Church ‘s benefit garage sale is 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the church gymnasium at Fourth and Country Club, followed by a bag sale. All proceeds will benefit Holy Cross Food Bank, Jason’s Friends and Habitat for Humanity.
The Casper Humane Society will team with Porter’s Mountain View Supply and Brattis Meat Market for a Wild West EggFest Barbecue from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Porter’s, 3861 Denis Dr. Prices at the door will be $15 per person/$20 per couple for all the barbecue you can eat. There will be food, door prizes, live DJ music and a chance to meet many of the dogs from the Humane Society.

WLC News 5.20.11 » Woods Learning Center
We were hard at work on assessments last week getting ready for our open house the last week of school. We finished the book Charlotte’s Web and are watching the movie, so we can compare and contrast the movie and book. Last week we also had neighborhood clean-up day where each circle group cleaned an area around WLC, including the Woods campus, the KW campus and the surrounding areas. A big thank you to Jen Miner, Chloe’s mom, who has helped us coordinate service activities this year. Students presented their reading group plays on Wednesday.
Intermediate As the end of the year approaches, students are working hard to finish up their end-of-the-year assessments and in class assignments: writing assessments, growth assessments, Wyoming mapping books, and the branches of government assessments. Students are pulling work samples from this year that they want to include in their portfolios. On Wednesday, May 25th, we will head to Cody and Thermopolis. We will visit the Buffalo Bill Cody Museum. After the museum tour, we will drive to Thermopolis and swim at the Star Plunge. In the morning we will we continue our experiential learning at the Wyoming Dinosaur Center and Dinosaur Dig. We held a meeting on May 19 for our 4th Grade 2012 DC/NY Trip planning. Based on survey results, a great number of you are on board, while a few have some concerns. This is understand-able as it is a big step for families and children. This was an especially crucial meeting for those with concerns, as we were able to have open discussions about funding and fund raising, as well as the impact this trip has on the students educationally. There was an opportunity to speak to parents who have sent their children in past years. We looked at next steps and discussed opportunities for enriching field experiences for those students who will be at Woods the week we are gone.
Middle School 6th Thanks to the many parents who drove rocketeers to EKW Park last week and braved the nippy weather conditions to enjoy the launches with us. Special thanks go to Jim Nations and Bryce Stewart who helped with the pre-launch rocket checks. We launched little rockets and big rockets, one-stagers, two-stagers, three-stagers, and even R2D2. Canada Day has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 24. Students needed more time to put together their Canada presentations, and I am hoping to be able to schedule a guest speaker. I also need a couple of parent volunteers.
