Ritual and Rhubarb Pie: First Time for Dance at the Glen Workshop

Mount Holyoke's three (yes, three!) dance studios are the most spacious and well-equipped I've ever been in, except perhaps at the Hong Kong Arts Centre, where I danced in the early '90s. My three students at the Glen were willing and enthusiastic, agreeing from the start to perform in my presentation at the end of the week. My workshop, titled "Dance as Spiritual Path," was open to all, regardless of training or preparation. By the end of the first day, I was exhausted. Our non-stop schedule went from three hours of class in the morning to lectures in each of the disciplines taught (fiction, poetry, fiber art, songwriting, calligriaphy and spiritual writing, besides dance). Dinner at 5:30 was followed by another lecture and a worship service. On Tuesday, Interplayer Judith Reichsman visited our class and introduced students to this playful form of improvisation, adding welcome variety to the class. The latter is a video installation of dances done in confined spaces: a sandbox, milky water, a piece of astroturf. The sandbox dance stressed choreographic relationships between two people who mirrored or echoed or spooned with each other, sometimes claustrophobic, sometimes escaping to disappear from the frame. One astroturf piece was a puppy pile of bodies. You can see the second one's tricky slips and slides above. "Adamantine" made use of the company's gorgeous men and women, the paraphernalia of theatre (lights and a fabric "wall") and live music ranging from an acoustic ballad to rhythmic percussion. Darkness obscured events later revealed, while a strobe light showed transitions that appeared magical. The "wall" of fabric rotated, surprises always behind it. All Glen participants were grateful that Thursday was a day off, nothing scheduled. I went for walks and worked on my presentation, having gotten a sense from the other talks of what was expected. But whoa! Suddenly only two days were left for the students to finish learning and rehearsing their dance, a re-choreographed version of "Y'rushalayim," with music by Max Janowsky. I'd originally done this piece as part of an organ-and-dance concert with organist Tom Weisflog at St. Thomas Apostle Church in Hyde Park. The presentation was our chance to make a case for dance at the Glen. Accordingly, I told my story (short version), referring to my book but focusing primarily on the role of dance in my life.
