Student to measure area lakes' ecological health

Environmental science students from colleges in Rochester and Brockport are conducting a study on the ecological health of four lakes — Grass, Millsite, Mud and Red — in the towns of Alexandria and Theresa and a portion of the Indian River.

During the two-month study, conducted on behalf of the Indian River Lakes Conservancy, Redwood, the three students will be determining the chemical profile — pH level, total phosphates, nitrates, fecal E. coli, dissolved oxygen and temperature — of the waters and sample macro invertebrates and aquatic vegetation, with special attention to invasive species, among other things.

"The students will be busy surveying the water quality, take samples of macro invertebrates and produce site descriptions all summer through Aug. 12 and will produce a joint report in the next semester," said M. Vici Diehl, a conservancy board member who is supervising the students.

The study is funded by an $8,500 Great Lakes Innovative Stewardship through Education Network matching grant, and the conservancy is investing $2,000 of its own funds in hopes of improving the region's water quality through the research.

The students conducting the study, the "undergraduate stewardship liaisons," are Matt Laine, a senior at SUNY Brockport; Laura Lanzafame, a graduate of Monroe Community College who will attend SUNY Brockport this fall to work on her degree in environmental science, and Caitlin Trueting, a graduate student at Rochester Institute of Technology.

Mrs. Diehl said all three students are "top environmental science students" who bring with them field experience and much enthusiasm.

To assist them with the study, many residents have agreed to allow the students use of their waterfront property or boats, Mrs. Diehl said. The Jefferson County Soil and Water Conservation District also has offered the use of a boat and the assistance of a student intern from SUNY Geneseo.

The students plan to make two presentations on their work to science students and the public on July 26 at Indian River Central High School and will be making further presentations at other area high schools this fall. Residents will have a chance to meet the three students at the conservancy's Celebration of the Lakes Picnic on July 23.

Mrs. Diehl said the study report will be posted on the IRLC website. Different lakes and river sections might be surveyed in following years, she said.

The report will be shared with other organizations, including lake associations, the Soil and Water Conservation District, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Jefferson County and the state Department of Environmental Conservation.

Rooney honors 2 Clark students

Two Clark Advanced Learning Center students, McKenzie Merritt and Amisha Budhdeo, not long ago received 2011 Congressional Awards presented by Congressman Tom Rooney. The Congressional Award recognizes achievement, first move and service in America’s youth.

Merritt of Stuart is the Gold endowment recipient. The16-year-old has warranted 44 college credits toward an associate in humanities grade from Indian River State College and is on the President’s List. She is majoring in medical research. The Clark sophomore has volunteered more than 400 hours, aiding instructors at the Gertrude Walden Child Care Center, at the Fitness Center at Martin Memorial Hospital South, at the American Red Cross and with Girl Scout activities. The Congressional Gold Medal is the top honor and requires 400 hours of intentional open service, 200 hours of personal development, and 200 hours of earthy fitness.

The Silver and Bronze endowment target is Amisha Budhdeo of Stuart. The16-year-old has warranted 35 college credits toward an associate in humanities grade from Indian River State College and is on the President’s List. She wants to turn a doctor. The Clark sophomore has volunteered more than 200 hours at the Gertrude Walden Child Care Center aiding instructors.

The Congressional Award provides an chance for young people to set and accomplish severe goals that erect disposition and encourage residents service, personal growth and citizenship.

Mullen earns preparation grade

Michelle Mullen of Palm City not long ago graduated from Eastern Connecticut State University in Willimantic, Conn. She warranted a bachelor’s of broad studies grade in education.

Golf eventuality benefits Wildlife Center

The Treasure Coast Wildlife Center astounded golfers at its annual Golf for Wildlife contest on May 20 with the let go of two young cackle owls. The let go kicked off the contest at Loblolly Pines Golf Course.

The 14- to 16-week-old owls were lifted at the Treasure Coast Wildlife Center in Palm City, learning behaviors vital for eccentric presence from broker cackle owls.

The Golf for Wildlife tournament, hosted by long-time supporters of the organization, Glen Hess and the Vicki Hess Foundation, lifted more than $28,000 to gain the center’s principal assignment ” the reconstruction and lapse of sick, harmed or orphaned furious animals to their innate environment.
