Favorite Quotes From Our Fathers

Father’s Day is this Sunday, so I thought I would share some quotes about fathers.  But then I started thinking of all the quotes my own father has shared with me and my siblings (and our friends and relatives and the mail carrier and strangers on the street – basically anyone who would listen.)  You could call my dad the man with the one-liners – and we love him for it.  

“Do you walk to work or take your lunch?” A favorite opening line of my dad’s.  Makes a person wonder how to answer him – before my dad starts chuckling and they realize that’s just my dad’s sense of humor.

Don’t ever expect a straight answer to the common question of “How are you?” if you’re talking to my dad.  Unless you can decipher what the response “Oh, fair to partly cloudy” means.

And then there were the times growing up when my siblings and I would fight.  My dad would always chime in trying to stop the verbal brawl saying, “Don’t use “You” statements.”  I never understood what he meant until many years later.  It’s a good rule to keep in mind, but at the time I just changed my wording around to say to my brother, “I think you’re an idiot” instead of “You are an idiot.”  In my mind I had changed it from a “You” statement to an “I” statement.

Many fathers have been known to pass on certain quotes and sayings to their children.  Whether it’s “I had to walk a mile to and from school everyday – uphill both ways” or “As long as you’re living under my roof, you’ll obey my rules.”

My father-in-law used to remind his two boys growing up, “It’s just as easy to keep the top half of the gas tank full as it is the bottom half,” so as not to have them wait until the last minute and possibly run out of gas on the open country roads.

My husband, on the other hand, is famous for saying to our young boys, “Aren’t you ever going to stop growing?” After which the boys always start giggling.  What they don’t realize is that my husband is only half-kidding – he tells me he’d love for our kids to stay the same ages they are right now.  But then our boys would never grow up to be fathers themselves and relay their own fatherly quotes.
