Osteoarthritis (OA), also known as degenerative arthritis, is the most common form of joint disease. Typical symptoms include joint pain, swelling, stiffness and instability. Severe forms of OA result in the complete loss of joint mobility and eventually require joint replacement.

Traditional therapy for OA is mainly focused on pain control using nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs).
