DVD Extra: Sony's MOD -- Madman, madwoman, musical remakes
Sony's manufacturing-on-demand program -- the somewhat awkwardly titled Screen Classics by Request -- has stepped up its output in recent months, and has begun selling DVDs through the Warner Archive website as well as Sony's Columbia Classics site.
Sony's library may not have the breadth of Warners' huge multi-studios holdings, but it contains many worthwhile, sought-after (if lesser known) Columbia Pictures titles that are being offered in dazzling transfers that are consistently among the sharpest-looking in the burgeoning MOD fields.
One great thing about the MOD programs is that they allow you to chart the progress of directors by filling in gaps in their DVD resumes with lesser-known films. Take Columbia stalwart Charles Vidor, best known these days for the noir classic "Gilda.''
No relation to legendary Texas native King Vidor, the Hungarian-born director scored his biggest success with "A Song to Remember'' (1944) the campy Technicolor Chopin biopic with Cornel Wilde, Merle Oberon, Paul Muni and Jose Iturbi on the soundtrack that was among the initial offerings from Screen Classics on Demand.
The program also offers Vidor's "Over 21'' (1945), a forgotten comedy starring Irene Dunne and Alexander Knox based on an autobiographical play by Ruth Gordon about her and her middle-aged husband Garson Kanin's Army experiences when he served in the Army during World War II.
Charles Vidor, who broke into Hollywood features by taking over direction of "The Mask of Fu Manchu'' (1932) without credit from Charles Brabin, bounced around from studio to studio for several years until his breakthrough feature at Columbia, "Blind Alley'' (1939). A sleeper in its day, this is a little-seen link between '30s crime movies and the noirs of the '40s and '50s -- it was, in fact, remade nine years later as a full-fledged noir, Rudolph Mate's "The Dark Past'' with William Holden and Lee J. Cobb.
Ralph Bellamy, who had played Ginger Rogers' psychiatrist in "Carefree'' the year before, is a more serious, pipe-smoking member of the profession here. I use DVD Shrink with AnyDVD, because (no offense) I think that even now, it is simply the best DVD processing software out there, ever made, hands down, period!!! Lots of software CLAIMS that it can compress down to 50% (2 to 1) of the original size and it will look just like the original, but I have found that claim to be a load of crap with every piece of software I have tried using heavy compression due to the size of the original! I can immediately tell the difference!!! DVD Shrink does have problems with some of the movies that came out in the last few months and it won't read the discs, so I guess something has changed with the disc/movie encryption lately. With those movies, I have to use AnyDVD to rip it to a folder and then process it with DVD Shrink. That is why I am considering CloneDVD2, but I just don't want it without the features that I will mention. I would suffer a lot more by owning CloneDVD2, than I would gain by saving that step of ripping to a folder first, if it does not have the features I will tell you about further down. For example, nothing puts out a better quality picture when compression is in play, than DVD Shrink. Nothing! And I have tried them all, including yours. Yours is a nice product, no doubt! I'm not knocking it. If Shrink didn't exist, I'd be using yours, believe me! Like I said, I am a "Sly" customer. <lol> It's just missing these features that in my opinion, keep it from being the best out there and above all of the competition, which I believe it would be, if you added them and let people know they're there, because then it would have all of Shrink's cool features added to the way cool list of features that your software has and it would be updated! How cool would that be?! AAnd what more can you ask for than that?! As far as the cool Shrink features I am requesting for CloneDVD2, for one thing, DVD Shrink has a WAY COOL feature (see picture named, "Start-End"), that allows the user (when doing "Movie Only") to select the Starting and Ending points of the movie, so that the user can eliminate the beginning studio logos (I don't mean the trailers) and get right to the first actual scene in the movie and they can cut off the 8 miles of credits at the end and stop it right after the main credits for the actors.
