Abboud's Salvatore Mellace is passionate about patterns
Italy, 1953.
An 8-year-old intently watches his father, the village tailor, alter a handmade suit in his custom-tailoring shop in the tiny village of Montauro, Calabria.
Each day, the boy spends hours at the shop, staring at his father's callused hands deftly moving pins and needles in and out of silks and linens.
The boy wants nothing more than to do what his father does. During slow times at the shop, or after work, the boy asks his father to help him draft patterns for his own suits.
But thick, clean drawing paper is not accessible or affordable in the tiny village. The father tells the boy to gather empty cement bags from construction sites. If the cement paper isn't large enough for the boy to draw on, the tailor and the boy sew two pieces together with fine thread.
That boy, Salvatore Mellace, is today executive vice president of design and quality control for Joseph Abboud Manufacturing in New Bedford.
Mellace, of North Dartmouth, is one of the best known tailors in the high-end men's garment industry.
He has tailored suits for NFL and NBA coaches and athletes, as well as the cast of "Fox NFL Sunday" — Jimmy Johnson Howie Long, Michael Strahan, Curt Menefee and Terry Bradshaw.
He is the personal tailor for Dwyane Wade of the NBA's Miami Heat, recently tailored a suit for his teammate, LeBron James, and makes suits for members of the N.Y. Rangers hockey team.
His clients also include the U.S. Olympic basketball team, Super Bowl commentators, CBS Sport commentators, actors attending the Oscar or Grammy shows, and Massachusetts politicians such as Gov. Deval Patrick, U.S. Rep. Barney Frank and New Bedford Mayor Scott W. Lang.
Mellace's story is a true American Success Story: That little boy drawing on cement bags in Italy became one of the most distinguished tailors in the United States.
"In 1962, when I was age 17, my family sailed from Italy to New York City by way of the Cristoforo Colombo," says Mellace, his voice still retaining the melody of his homeland.
Arriving in America, Mellace had only one goal: To become a tailor like his father, Domenico.
Mellace found a job as a coat-maker for Barron- Anderson in Boston in 1963, and became close with a group of older tailors who served as mentors and role models.
