Schlarman to have language study available online

DANVILLE — When the new Schlarman Academy opens its doors this fall, kindergarten through eighth-grade Catholic school children will be able to study foreign language through an online program by Rosetta Stone, a leading worldwide provider of technology-based language learning.

"We are very excited that the Rosetta Stone method offers us the capability to present as many as 25 different languages to our younger students," Mary Pat Shepherd, the academy's assistant principal, said in a news release. "The intent of introducing languages is to help prepare our students for a global world. We hope to give them more opportunities to learn about other cultures and to be exposed to life experiences outside their present world."

The area's Catholic grade schools did not offer foreign languages to the younger students in the past.

Shepherd said officials investigated various types of language programs before deciding to go with this system.

Rosetta Stone is an interactive learning environment that provides instant feedback and coaching. It is the leading language software in the world, serving millions of learners in more than 150 countries.

The learning method is Web-based, so students can work ahead on their home computers, at their own pace. The Web version that the academy purchased allows the entire student population to have access to Rosetta Stone courseware 24 hours a day, seven days a week during the annual subscription period.

The site license also provides access to all levels of any language that the school wants to offer.

Shepherd said the academy will offer Spanish, French and a third language, which is undecided at this time. Kindergartners through fifth-graders will be exposed to all three languages on two six-week cycles.

The hope is that by the time the students enter middle school, they will be able to choose which language they enjoy the most, Shepherd said.

Then during their three years in middle school, students will obtain one full year of language and be ready to move on to Spanish 2, French 2 or the second course of the third language.

Ninth- through 12th-grade students will continue to learn French and Spanish in the traditional classroom setting with a certified teacher.

"Rosetta Stone promises to be fun and effective, using a natural method that teaches a new language directly, without translation," Shepherd said.
