Napa Home and Garden Faces Lawsuits in South Carolina

Satterfield et al. v. Napa Home & Garden Inc., et al. , No. 7:11-cv-01514-JMC (D.S.C.) was filed by two , with 2nd and 3rd degree burns over 30% of her body. Her husband suffered serious burns after attempting to extinguish the fire.

Both complaints allege serious injuries due to negligent design, manufacturing and testing, as well as failure to warn on the part of Napa Home and Garden, Inc.; Fuel Barons, Inc.; and Losorea Packaging, Inc.

Napa Firepots , also commonly called FireLites™ and fireburners, are outdoor glass or clay pots with gel fuel containers that can be scented with citronella, making them a popular addition to the outdoor areas of homes. Although marketed as "people safe" and "the cleanest and safest fuel you can buy," the Napa Home and Garden gel is comprised of more than 90 percent ethyl alcohol, a volatile and highly flammable liquid with a vapor density less than that of propane.  Other manufacturers of these products include Birdbrain, Inc.

The Consumer Product and Safety Commission has issued a warning to consumers about the dangers of these products.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and Health Canada announced a voluntary recall Monday .  Bell said customers should stop using the recalled products immediately unless otherwise instructed.

Name of Product: Full-face bicycle helmets

Units: About 31,100 in the United States

Importer: Bell Sports

Hazard: The plastic buckle that connects the chin straps sometimes fails, causing the helmet to come off the rider’s head. This poses a hazard to riders in the event of a fall, potentially causing a severe head injury .

Description: This recall involves Bell Exodus full-face helmets with a plastic buckle on the chinstrap.  The helmets had an angled visor and were sold in youth size. The model and parts numbers are listed below.  The numbers can be found on a removable sticker located on the side of the helmet.

Sold by: Walmart stores nationwide and Amazon.com between August 2009 and March 2011 for between $50 and $60.

Made in: Taiwan

Solution: Consumers should stop using the helmets immediately and contact Bell Sports for a replacement or refund.
