I was looking through the stock pigeons down the side of the house and it really was the first time that I spent time just looking instead of going in cleaning out, feeding, watering and then onto the race team. On this occasion I stood there looking at what rag bags they were, even though they were finishing off a few young birds they are dropping feathers as if there was no tomorrow. They really are going through a good early moult and by the time we get to the middle of summer most will have had a new coat on them. All a bit early but it is down to two things, the first being the red rope light that I have on for the winter months and secondly the fact that they are breeding early. I must admit that they are moulting well and by the time these notes appear I will also have separated them for the rest of the year. This will then push them into a further heavier moult and their new coats will be shining before the rest have even finished racing. I then took a look at the racers and they have not even cast a flight yet but I don’t want them to because the longer races are just around the corner and the fuller the wing the better. The racers are holding out well and the hens are getting keener being locked in their boxes each day and only seeing any other pigeon when they are out for their daily exercise. Whenever I go in to their section some of the hens are driving to the front of the box and when I put my hand near to them they are pecking me. The problem that I am having is when they are out they are chasing other pigeons around the sky and they are splitting up and returning one or two at a time. And I have been waiting hours for some to return and when they do all they want to do is show to me on the loft but hard to get in. the cocks are nearly as bad but they are more controllable than hens and that is always the case. I could of course cut the corn down but that is not use at this time of the year they need a good body on them for the longer races. The body on the cocks is all there but in the hand they feel as though they need more because they are as light as a bundle of feathers but as I say the full body is there, let’s hope they can hold that body for the next few weeks. The cocks do have corn in front of them all the time so they are not kept short.
