Lake Zurich Resident And Lia Sophia Team Up To Support YMCA

There was a large display of jewelry, drinks and appetizers, and more than 25 women were talking and laughing. The only difference was that Lia Sophia Vision Manager Susanne Bailey was donating her profits from that party to the Strong Kids Campaign.

With the help of friends, family and Bailey, Schroedel raised more than $10,000 in one month for the Strong Kids Campaign, benefiting the Vernon Hills and Waukegan YMCA’s.

“I met Susanne at a party she was having for a friend of mine that benefited Juvenile Diabetes and I asked her if she would do one to support the Strong Kids Campaign - and she said yes,” explained Schroedel.

Bailey drove from St. John, IN, to support the cause.

“I do this five to six times a year to give back to organizations through my business,” she said.

Schroedel, once a volunteer at the Lake Zurich YMCA, switched her efforts to the Vernon Hills YMCA.

"I had an amazing experience working with Sean Nelson, the executive director at the Foglia YMCA and the staff,” explained Schroedel. “I just lost my passion for volunteering. But once I met Erin Russell, the director of membership at the Vernon Hills YMCA, my passion was reignited.”

She immediately began fundraising for the Strong Kids Campaign. It’s an annual fundraiser that uses the money to give children the financial opportunity to participate in sports, camps, childcare and other beneficial programs they aren’t able to afford.

“Children are our foundation and without a strong foundation, we don’t have anything,” said Schroedel.

She scheduled the party with Bailey and began her own email and Facebook campaign to get people to purchase jewelry.

“With just a few emails and a few posts on Facebook, this whole thing exploded and people have been buying and donating from California, Minnesota, Texas, New York and Wisconsin,” said Schroedel.

Her 6-year-old daughter, Tina, has also gotten involved by selling lemonade in the neighborhood and during swim lessons at the YMCA, giving all the proceeds to the Strong Kids Campaign. She has also decided to ask for donations to the Strong Kids Campaign in lieu of birthday presents this year.

“The YMCA is amazing because they are instilling what I want to instill in my daughter,” said Schroedel. “A volunteer is born.
