Ed Grisamore: Postcards from a summer day

The longest day of the year also brought the usual universal bewilderment. If this was the first day of summer, then what the heck have we been living with for the past five weeks?

I went on a “staycation’’ Tuesday. For six hours on the 172nd day of the year, I bounced around town like a red rubber ball.

I roamed up and down Gray Highway. I cruised out to North Wesleyan Drive. I traversed parts of Vineville and Columbus Road. And I hopped from College Hill to Breezy Hill to Forest Hill to Pleasant Hill.

I took on the bumpy bricks of Orange Street. I steered around the road hazards of Orange Barrels Boulevard, otherwise known as Interstate 75.

From early morning to late afternoon, I watched the day heat up from warm to bake to broil. Every few hours, the thermometer kept reaching for another rung on the ladder.

Since 2004, I have assigned myself the summer solstice beat. I call it my “Postcards from a Summer Day.”

No postage was required. A GPS was not necessary. I followed my nose for 114 miles. Along the way, I discovered slices of life and random acts of findness.

I watched two boys playing with hula hoops in front of North Macon Presbyterian Church on Rivoli Drive. I saw two youngsters tossing a football over a canopy in front of a detail shop on Hillcrest Boulevard.

On Poplar Street, I observed several women carrying umbrellas above their heads for portable shade. (I’m surprised anyone still knows how to work an umbrella.) I rode past six palm trees in front of the Best Western Riverside Inn, but there wasn’t an ocean breeze for 187 miles.

In the Bloomfield subdivison known as Hyannis Port, I counted 12 red, white and blue ribbons along John Kennedy Drive. At the front door of McAfee Towers, I waved to a man in a wheelchair who was wearing an Atlanta Braves baseball cap.

At the Krispy Kreme on North Avenue, the famous red neon sign touting hot doughnuts was working like Pavlov’s dog. The parking lot was almost full.

However, the parking lot at Springdale Elementary on Northside Drive was empty. But the message board carried a cruel reminder. This may have been the first day of summer, but the first day of school is only 49 days away.

At the main post office downtown, I watched a little girl in a polka-dot dress holding hands with her daddy. At Oak Haven Golf Club, I saw a young boy holding the flagstick for his father as he lined up to putt on the No. 10 green.
