Sweetwater ISD updates school dress code
The Sweetwater Independent School District has opted to revise its dress code rather than require that students wear uniforms.
Superintendent Terry Pittman said the school board adopted the revisions in its May meeting, after a study by a committee composed of community members and district representatives regarding needed changes.
He said the committee was formed to investigate the possibility of adopting standard attire, or uniforms, for students. After several public meetings and after studying the results of a survey, it was determined that the district would not adopt the standard attire but would make revisions to make the existing code more clear.
Pittman said a key revision related to boys' sagging pants and what the punishments would be for code violations.
The code now states that pants, shorts, slacks, skorts and skirts must be worn at the natural waist and be no more than one size larger than the natural waist size. It also provides that belts must be worn appropriately in belt loops and at the natural waist.
Wylie High School has a similar stipulation in its dress code, which states that pants shall be the appropriate size, worn at the waist and not reveal underwear.
Wylie High School Principal Mitch Davis said a revision to the school's dress code was made about four years ago that stipulated that the length of shorts, skorts and skirts must be no shorter than the length of a credit card, or about 3 inches, above the knee. Previously, the code stated the attire should be fingertip length, but the variation in the length of arms made that standard inconsistent.
The dress code for Abilene ISD is included in the students' code of conduct and provides that clothing must be appropriate size and worn at the waistline. It also specifies that skirts, shorts, pants or dresses may be no shorter than five inches above the knee or higher than the extended fingertips, whichever is more modest.
