Plates to honor the fallen

AUGUSTA — State Rep. Brad Moulton, R-York, was on hand June 7 as Gov. Paul LePage signed into law a bill to create Gold Star Family license plates for family members of Mainers killed in military operations.

"Next to health insurance reform, this is the bill I am most proud to sign," the governor told those gathered in his cabinet room.

Moulton, who sponsored the bill, was joined at the signing ceremony by John Mixon of Ogunquit, a Vietnam veteran who is leading the fundraising campaign to cover the cost of manufacturing the plates. Family members of fallen Maine servicemen also attended the signing, along with Maine Secretary of State Charlie Summers.

The new license plate was designed by Emily Knight, a graduating senior at Wells High School. It bears the insignia of the Gold Star lapel pin established by Congress in 1965 to identify parents, spouses and next of kin of service members killed in action. The plate also carries the words, "Land of the Free — Because of the Brave."

With the signing of LD 1529, "An Act Honoring Gold Star Families through Special Registration Plates," Maine becomes the last state to have the plates.

"To date, we have done little in Maine for those who have lost loved ones in military operations," Moulton said. "This is something we can do publicly to recognize their sacrifice and honor those they have lost."

The bill stipulates that a family member would include a widow, a widower, mother, father, stepmother, stepfather, mother or father through adoption, foster parent, grandmother, grandfather, child, stepchild, child through adoption and siblings. The Gold Star Family plates are expected to be available by the end of the summer.

A Gold Star bill in 2009 was unsuccessful because it carried a fiscal note of $10,700 to manufacture the plates. The failure of that bill, sponsored by the late Everett McLeod, a state representative from Lee, inspired Mixon to step forward with his pledge to cover the manufacturing costs through his organization Run for the Fallen Maine. The governor agreed to submit a bill, which Moulton brought forth into the Legislature.

Since World War II, approximately 3,500 Maine residents have died in action, including 49 who have fallen in the Global War on Terror, mostly in Iraq (28) and Afghanistan (18). According to Peter Ogden, Director of the Bureau of Veterans' Services, Maine lost 2,554 service members in World War II, 233 in the Korean War, 344 in Vietnam and two in Somalia.

Weiner's Vehicle Registration Expired, License Plate on Wrong Car ...

When Weiner (D-Queens, Brooklyn) was photographed by the Daily News fleeing the Capitol in his Nissan Pathfinder, it was clear the July 2007 registration sticker in his window was expired, and there was no inspection sticker to be seen. Weiner, through a staffer, said the 1988 Nissan Pathfinder was registered in New York State.

Not so, said the state Department of Motor Vehicles.

The New York license plate bolted on Weiner’s Pathfinder – US Congress 9 – had expired as of 2006, according to the DMV.

“That license plate should not be on a car,” a DMV spokeswoman said. It wasn’t even issued to the Pathfinder, but to another one of Weiner’s cars, a Honda, according to vehicle records.

So let’s recap:

1) His registration is expired.

2) No inspection sticker is visible.

3) The license plate on his Nissan Pathfinder belongs to a Honda.

4) The license plate expired 5 years ago.

5) Weiner lied about New York state registration.

Weiner likes to push for higher taxes and more regulation, and yet he can’t manage to pay the registration and taxes he owes to New York state. Taxes and regulation for thee, not for me.

His household income is well over $300,00 per year — placing him in the Obama Administration’s “rich” category. What’s the matter, he can’t afford the registration and taxes ordinary folks making $55,000 per year pay?
