"We found one!" shouted Rick Atkins, state director of Gold Prospectors and Treasure Hunters of America, as he showed the small speck of gold within Jeff Wex's pan.
Wex broke into a small smile, as his 7-year-old son, Judah, splashed through the water to get a closer look. Neither had gone gold panning before.
The Wexes took part in the second annual event in Drumore Township that helped participants learn the basics of gold panning, as well as the differences between gold and similar-looking minerals.
Almost every Lancaster County stream and river is home to some sort of gold, Atkins said, although residents won't be pulling nuggets out of the water anytime soon.
Due to glacial patterns and the geology of the area, the most common form of gold is flour gold — the kind Jeff Wex had in his pan — which is about as big as the sharp end of a pin.
"It's the little speck in the vial," he said, holding up his glass container, "if you can even see it."
But the Wexes didn't seem to mind the size: Judah went back to skipping rocks and his dad kept on panning.
That's what the process requires, said Atkins: lots and lots of patience. After five years of gold panning recreationally, he said he has enough for a "decent-sized" gold ring, but he's not in it for the money.
Instead, he uses the hobby as a way to get his wife, Erika, and their two children, Anastasia, 5, and Christopher, 2, out of the house and into Mother Nature.
The Leola family goes on camping trips almost every weekend, especially with the nonprofit Gold Prospectors and Treasure Hunters Conewago chapter, which the couple has been a part of for two years. They recently spent three days in North Carolina panning for gold.
"It's something we can do as a family," Erika Atkins said. "Plus, the kids sleep like babies after days like this.
