City Hall to probe councillor
EMBATTLED Geelong councillor Jan Farrell will be probed over her controversial decision to defend a glassing thug after several complaints from ratepayers.
Cr Farrell came under fire when she gave character evidence in the County Court for family friend Tobias Sheehan in her capacity as a councillor and writing a two-page reference using a City of Greater Geelong letterhead.
Sheehan, 25, was yesterday jailed for 2 1/2 years with a minimum of one year, after he struck his victim with a glass full of beer at an Ocean Grove bar in 2009.
Cr Farrell's decision has angered publicans, the police association, senior local police and victims of crime groups.
City of Greater Geelong chief executive officer Stephen Griffin said the process for dealing with the complaints was currently under consideration.
He said the council would respond to the complaints once all the details were understood.
One letter written to the council claimed Cr Farrell had breached the code of conduct and needed to stand down.
"As a ratepayer of this municipality, I was appalled to read about Jan Farrell's actions," the complainant wrote. "I implore the council to ensure this matter is treated with the level of severity it deserves and appropriate action is taken.
"Taking the appropriate action will ensure ratepayers maintain faith in the council, which I am sure you will agree is important."
The owner of Zebra Crossing, where the attack happened, Caron Zillwood also filed a letter of complaint.
"I believe Cr Farrell has improperly sought to confer an advantage on the offender by using her position to testify on his behalf," she writes in the letter.
Cr Farrell has stood by her support for Sheehan.
